Abstract

This study investigates the application of Artificial Intelligence for Innovative services in federal university libraries in Nigeria. The objectives of the study were to identify the types of AI technologies used for innovative services in federal university libraries in Nigeria, to identify challenges encountered in the application of AI for innovative services in federal university libraries in Nigeria, to determine measures taken to mitigate the challenges in the application of AI for innovative services in federal university libraries in Nigeria. This study adopted a qualitative research approach. The sample size for this study was thirty (30) System librarians and Heads of ICT units drawn from the total population of two hundred and fifty-two (252) librarians in the six (6) federal university libraries in Nigeria that constituted the study setting, the sample size was the outcome of the multistage sampling technique was employed to draw the sample for this study. The data collected from the participants through interview was first organized transcribed and analysed thematically into different themes. The findings revealed that Federal university libraries in Nigeria employ various AI technologies, including chatbots, recommendation systems, automation of cataloguing and classification, and digital asset management. These innovations enhance user experience and improve library services. However, challenges persist, such as inadequate IT infrastructure, internet connectivity, and hardware resources. To address these, measures include aligning AI solutions with user demands and library goals, conducting needs assessments, and establishing moral standards for AI decision-making. Libraries can improve accuracy and accessibility by integrating AI-powered systems, benefiting researchers, teachers, and students. Successful integration requires funding, staff education, collaboration with experts, data security, and performance monitoring. Recommendations include prioritizing training programs for library staff, developing a comprehensive AI strategy, and addressing ethical and privacy concerns through transparent policies and guidelines. By leveraging AI technologies, federal university libraries in Nigeria can transform library operations, improve user experiences, and meet the evolving needs of the academic community.\\\"\\r\\n\\r\\n
